Declining interest in Flyfishing?

July 11th, 2008 · 1 Comment

This is a new blog about fly fishing. I’ve seen many new fly fishing sites pop up in the past year. Seemingly, in my world, fly fishing is growing. However, we also see many fly shops closing. Is interest in fly fishing waning?

According to Google Trends, internet searches have declined about 45% since 2004. The nearby graph shows the popularity of searching the internet for “Fly Fishing”. Mid summer is most popular, but unfortunately declining with each year.

Unfortunately, interest in Colonoscopy has remained constant over the same period

Good news, interest in whiskey has remained constant. I hope there is not a correlation…

Fish Porn is a growth industry

Montana fishing is spotty, but appears to be declining also

While Hanna Montana has appeared to hit her peak (does this mean we should expect something outrageous from her?)

I bet since there are so many FF sites now and fly fishers are getting more internet savvy that the general queries for Fly fishing are turning into more specific requests like PMD, Hatch Chart, and Albino Moose that swims under water. This may explain the drop in that search trend. Whereas, anyone can pull Colonoscopy out of their ass at any time. I know I just turned 50!
