Woven Stonefly

I’ve seen woven fly patterns over the years, including the Bitch Creek.  I’ve frequently thought of trying to tie one, but haven’t been inspired enough to actually do it.  Tonight, I ran across Soul of Streams’s post about the history of the woven fly (Woven-Body Fly History by Robert Williamson).

Here is my take on a woven fly, kind of a bitchy creek stonefly with soft hackle.

  • Hook: Mustad streamer hook (3x long), size 6
  • Weight: 10 wraps of 0.025 lead
  • Tail: Goose Biot
  • Body: Medium Chenille, black over brown, woven with overhand knot
  • Hackle: Hen Back

This reminds me of the rubber legs patterns we used this summer & fall on the Snake. Instead of weaving black & brown, I used black and brown varigated chenille.

Nice fly. Simple is good. I get carried away with technique to satisfy creative urges. Thanks for the link to my blog too. Your site is great.
