Survivorman – Flyfisherman

In this week’s episode of Survivorman, Les Stroud spent a week in the Rocky Mountains with 2 horses. He also brought a fly rod. Several times during the show, he referenced a fly rod as an essential piece of survival gear.

Some quotes:

  • “I’ve never fly-fished before. I’ve bait fished all my life. It can’t be that much different, can it?”
  • “That was fast; lost my fly already. My bad technique. “
  • “Make sure for survival you carry a fly-fishing rod with you”
  • “For the riders in the Colorado Rockies, sometimes all it takes is one fly-fishing rod to make the difference.”

I made sure my wife saw the episode, now I rationalize a new rod, so we can survive a week of being stranded in the wild…

Check your local listings for the Discovery Channel, or download the entire episode for $1.99 at iTunes.

Seems like a great way to rationalize a new rod. And waaaay better advice than you’d get from that goon Bear Gryllis who’s always biting snakes in half and drinking his own piss after being in the woods 15 minutes.
