I did some playing around with peacock herl last night. Here are the results. The pictures show 3 strands of herl tied in a bare hook ( I started by tying soft hackle, but for picture clarity cut off the hackle on a couple.

At the craft store, looking at beads, I grabbed the ear-ring parts. Each package cost $2.99. There are 100 shafts and 4 ear-rings (I opted for the 14K gold plated ear-rings, they also had non-plated which had about 24 in the package.
