At the craft store, looking at beads, I grabbed the ear-ring parts. Each package cost $2.99. There are 100 shafts and 4 ear-rings (I opted for the 14K gold plated ear-rings, they also had non-plated which had about 24 in the package.

There are several options here, the hooks on the right go in the ear and have an eye. The shafts on the left are about an inch long and also have an eye. For my first attempt, I put the shaft in the vise, with a quarter inch in the vise. The rest of the shaft was about a size 10 hook shank long.

I tied an Adams pattern, with size 10.  Not bad, and pretty inexpensive.
