Rubberlegs

Last week, these pixels have featured a dry pattern for the western salmon fly, the Updated Modified Sofa Pillow. Big and orange.

A version of the nymph, called Barns Pool Stonefly was shown last fall.  I like to tie, so the Barn’s Pool Stonefly is a fun pattern to tie - especially when preparing for a fall trip. But, they don’t move into the completed bin very fast.  With summer fishing, especially fishing from a drift boat where the oarsman might not be willing to hold position every time I’m hung up, calls for a quicker and easier pattern.

This is where the Rubberlegs pattern shines.

  • Hook: 3xL streamer/nymph hook: sizes 10 – 4
  • Weight: Bead is optional, lead is not. 20 wraps of 0.025
  • Tail: Black or Brown small rubber leg material
  • Body: Medium Chennile (black/brown varigated shown here, all black works well also)
  • Legs: Black or Brown small rubber leg material. 4 legs per side (trout can’t count)
  • Antenna (optional): Black or Brown rubber leg material

Tying notes: use the fold in method to add the rubber legs. This is why you end up with 4 legs on each side.
