A welcome sight – fly fishing the McCloud

July 5th, 2009 · 2 Comments

We were planning to fish the McCloud, hoping to catch some native redbands for the California Heritage Trout challenge. While there, I wanted to also fish the McCloud River Preserve.  Getting to the river in the late morning though, I was pessismistic on our chances to get on the preserve (its limited to 10 rods per day, first come first served).

We drove down the dusty road and hiked down the hill anyway. Why not? You never know…

What a welcome site, available tags.

Stay tuned for more about the preserve and the Nature Conservancy. Had a fantastic conversation with one of the conservationalists about the plans for the Shasta River restoration at Big Springs.

Oh, by the way, went up river the next day and got into some redbands.
