Thanks to a comment from Jim McCarthy, where he pointed to the WaterWatch web site, we have a cool video to watch where dams actually get blown up! The Water Watch organization is working to eliminate four dams on the Rouge river, with the goal to have the Rouge flow un-impeded for 157 miles.

Check out this video from January:

The video shows the staging for removal of the Savage Rapids dam, the #1 fish killer in Oregon. Here is a shot from the WaterWatch web site of the dam now. Looks like it won’t be killing too many fish in the future!

Three down, one to go!

Congratulations WaterWatch.

Those dammed rivers, killing the endangered salmon. These aren’t just any salmon, these are Columbia river salmon. We do everything possible to save the salmon, which have been bred in hatcheries, barged down river, tunneled and funneled past the dams, counted and coddled. After all that, they still face natural predators.

So, how to protect salmon from predators? Of course, eliminate the predators. All of this being a government run operation, each predator gets due process, a fair trial, appeals, and finally, at the end of the line, a humane night-night.

Here is a story of C265, a Sea Lion that was found guilty of eating salmon. C265 experienced the ultimate punishment. He was tracked for years (since 2002), before being put down for his salmon eating ways.

The complexity, cost, and effort of all of this boggles the mind. At least its providing jobs, and does match this era of “government can solve everything” mode of thinking.

As a reminder of all the other activities in place to mitigate the damage done by the dams, check out this 60 Minutes segment:
